The gentle white companion of the Mediterranean

For nearly three thousand years the Maltese has been prized as a affectionate lap dog — light on its feet, fearless for its size, and devoted to the people it loves. This is a plain-spoken guide to living well with one.

Temperament

Bold heart, soft manners

Maltese are playful, charming and surprisingly spirited. They bond closely with their household and thrive on company, often following a favourite person from room to room.

Bright and responsive, they take well to gentle, reward-based training and to early socialisation that builds quiet confidence rather than nervous chatter.

The coat

A single, silky coat

The Maltese wears a long, straight coat of pure white that hangs close to the body. Because there is no dense undercoat, the breed sheds very little — but the coat needs steady, gentle attention to stay free of tangles.

Many companions are kept in a short “puppy clip”, which keeps all of the charm with a fraction of the brushing.

Living together

A small dog for almost any home

Adaptable and portable, the Maltese is as content in a flat as in a house with a garden. A short daily walk and a little indoor play are usually enough to keep one happy and trim.

They are good companions for considerate older children and for anyone who can offer steady company and a warm lap.
