Care & grooming

A Maltese asks for little space and only moderate exercise — but the coat rewards a steady, gentle routine.

The coat

Brush a full-length coat gently every day, working in small sections down to the skin to catch tangles before they tighten into mats. A weekly bath with a mild dog shampoo keeps the white coat bright. Many owners choose a short clip, which keeps grooming to a quick comb a few times a week.

Eyes, ears and teeth

Wipe around the eyes daily with a little warm water to keep the area clean and reduce staining. Check the ears each week and keep the teeth clean with regular brushing — small breeds benefit greatly from steady dental care.

Exercise

A short daily walk and a little indoor play are plenty. The Maltese is lively but not tireless, and is easily kept fit and trim without long outings. Mental games and gentle training are as welcome as physical exercise.

Feeding

Feed a good-quality food formulated for small breeds, measured to keep a light, level frame. Toy dogs are easy to overfeed, so weigh treats against the day’s ration and keep fresh water always available.

Health

Maltese are generally long-lived, often sharing twelve to fifteen years with their families. As with many toy breeds, attention to dental health and steady weight goes a long way. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian remain the best routine care.
